Release notes for QTM v1.22 © 1993/4/5 Phoenix/Quantum
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
_
QTM (Q The Music) v1.22 update, 30th April 1995. |_|ISC PC compatible
--'\------------------
This Archive contains an update of the QTM Protracker music player,
originally released in June '94 by the Acorn User magazine. The !QTMTrack
desktop interface to QTM has not yet been significantly updated to warrant a
new release, so in order to cut down on space, only the actual player module
is present in this archive.
To upgrade the version of QTM used by your copy of !QTMTrack, simply copy
the file 'QTMModule' from this archive into the !QTMTrack.Modules directory.
Update information since QTM v1.01
----------------------------------
If you are already aware of the improvements made in the last release of QTM
(v1.21), skip this section, and read 'So what's new in QTM v1.22?', below.
QTM v1.2 is a largely re-written version of the original QTM (v1.00) player.
The main differences in this version of QTM is the totally new 'Transparent
Sound System' routine, and the greatly extended programmer's SWI interface
to the player. Full details of these can be found in the 'Technical' help
file.
Programmers will also be glad to know that this is the FASTEST ever version
of QTM - clocking in at 8.4% on average of Arm3 processor time (at 32uS
sample speed)! This percentage will be lower still on 33MHz A5000's and
RiscPCs! Again, full details of this can be found in the 'Technical' help
file.
The Transparent Sound System
----------------------------
A major improvement to QTM has been the addition of the new 'Transparent
Sound System' (TSS), which allows you to hear system sounds, such as the
system 'Beep', at the same time as listening to a piece of music on QTM. For
users wishing to try out the TSS, simply enter Basic, and type in the
following line, exactly as shown:
SYS "QTM_SoundControl",-1,1,-1
This sets up and enables the TSS, pressing Ctrl+G or the 'Copy' key should
now give the familiar system 'Beep', even after loading a song into QTM. Try
it and see...
If the 'Beep' sounds quieter than usual, this is because of QTM using 4
channels. You can use '*FX 212,&80' to increase the 'Beep' volume to max.
So what's new in QTM v1.22?
---------------------------
QTM v1.22 is an improved version of v1.21, with, amongst others, major
improvements being made to the sound control routines, and the addition of
special routines giving full VIDC-Enhancer compatibility. For a full list of
enhancements, see the help file '1-22Update'.
The sound control updates have resulted in a massive improvement to the
Transparent Sound System (TSS). This can now be used successfully with many
games which do not provide in-game music, to allow you to play your own
selected music and still hear the game's sound effects. An example of this
is with the excellent PD game 'Moonquake' which works fine when playing a
song with the TSS, and you can still hear all the explosions from the game!
A small extension to the programmer's interface has also been made in QTM
v1.22. This is in the form of an additional SWI QTM_Load call, R0=-1. See
the 'Technical' and 'SWI' help files for more information on this.
Future QTM releases
-------------------
Future releases of QTM and !QTMTrack, will be available through most major
BBSs and UK internet sites. As well (obviously) as the usual PD libraries,
such as Datafile PD.
Also look out for the large number of non-Quantum desktop interfaces to QTM
now appearing!
