  2.         BACKUP & RESTORE
  3.         ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
  4.     These are two programs to help you transfer files across a
  5. Serial Link to a Series 3a.
  6.     They are not complicated, but explaining exactly when you'll
  7. find them useful might be. And I'm no good at writing manuals.
  8. Still, here goes:

  11.         BACKUP
  12.         ÿÿÿÿÿÿ
  13.     If you're the proud owner of a IBM PC or compatible, Macintosh
  14. or Archimedes, and a Psion Serial Link, you will be able to use the
  15. supplied software to treat your PC's (or whatever) drive(s) as Psion
  16. drives. Transferring files is then as simple as using the Series
  17. 3a's `copy' function. Easy.
  18.     But what if, like me, you have another type of computer? In my
  19. case it's an Atari STE, but it could be an Amiga, or any other that
  20. has a serial (modem) port. You have to use the Series 3a `Comms'
  21. application to send files one at a time using one of the standard
  22. protocols: Xmodem, Ymodem or any variations thereof. You also need a
  23. program at the other end, to respond to the protocol. Tedious work,
  24. especially if you're doing a backup and need to transfer umpteen
  25. files. I have extra RAM in my Series 3a, and sending 3 megabytes
  26. file-by-file is no fun at all!
  27.     So: here's a program to make the Psion end of the operation
  28. easier. BACKUP will scan through the drives you specify, listing all
  29. the files it finds, and create a `script' file. This can then be
  30. translated, and executed by the `Comms' application, to send all the
  31. files, one after another, automatically. If you have a file transfer
  32. program at the other end that will receive files one after another,
  33. you can go away for a well-earned cup of tea or coffee, while your
  34. computers chug away merrily!

  37.         FEATURES

  39.     You can specify which of your Series 3a drive(s) (M, A and/or B)
  40. are to be backed up.
  41.  
  42.     You can specify the name of the script file to be created (the
  43. default is \SCR\BACKUP.SCR).
  44.  
  45.     You can set the serial port parameters: baud rate, parity, byte
  46. length, flow control, and file transfer protocol.
  47.  
  48.     You can also write out a list file for use with the RESTORE
  49. program (see below).
  50.  
  51.     To make backups easier, BACKUP can list only those files which
  52. have altered since the last backup.
  53.     It makes use of the MS-DOS `archive' file attribute. This is set
  54. whenever a file is created or written to, but otherwise ignored.
  55.     There are two options in BACKUP to control this: `only changed'
  56. will list only those files with the archive bit set, and `reset
  57. changed' resets the archive bit on those files, so they won't be
  58. listed next time. (Take care when using the second option, as if you
  59. make a mistake, you can't re-run BACKUP to get the same list of
  60. files.)

  62.         USING BACKUP
  63.         ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
  64.     The on-screen buttons are toggled by pressing their initial
  65. letter: they are activated when the `light' next to each turns
  66. black, and the button appears depressed.  The other options are
  67. accessed by menu.
  68.     Once you have set up the options you require, press ENTER or
  69. Psion-G to start scanning and creating the script, or ESCAPE or
  70. Psion-X to quit.

  72.     To transfer the files, translate the script file in the `Script'
  73. application, and execute the result in the `Comms' application (both
  74. of which come with the serial link).

  78.         RESTORE

  80.     BACKUP is for backing up files from your Series 3a to another
  81. computer. What about restoring files? Transferring them in the other
  82. direction is not so easy. I haven't yet found an Atari program which
  83. will send many files in one go, and so I have to send them one by
  84. one, by hand. But what happens at the Psion end? If you're using the
  85. Ymodem protocol, the filename is sent along with the file, so the
  86. Series 3a knows what to call the files it's receiving. But it
  87. doesn't know where to put them. So ... (blare of trumpets) ...
  88. here's RESTORE. Using the file list created (optionally) by BACKUP,
  89. it recreates all the directories and subdirectories, and moves all
  90. the files to their rightful places.
  91.     In the dialog box, specify the drive where all the files to be
  92. restored are (they should all be in the root or top-level
  93. directory), and the name of the list file created by BACKUP, and
  94. press ENTER to restore, or ESCAPE to quit.

  119. can take no responsibility for any problems you may have.  If your
  120. Psion forgets everything you've ever told it, or starts thinking
  121. it's a cabbage, please don't complain to me!

  124. friends, BBSs etc. The only restrictions are that this text file and
  125. the two programs are kept together, and that no alterations are
  126. made.
