  1.                          THE RPRINT.EXE PROGRAM
  2.                          ======================

  4. The \RPRINT directory contains the RPRINT.EXE program. RPRINT allows a
  5. Series 3/3a, MC, or HC (or any other serial-printing device) to print
  6. to a printer which is connected to an IBM PC/XT/AT or compatible. The
  7. PC must have a free serial port which is used to connect to the
  8. Series 3/MC/HC. The printer may be connected to a parallel or serial
  9. port on the PC, or be on a network.
  10.  
  11. Even if you can link the Series 3/MC/HC directly to the printer, 
  12. there may be reasons why it is more convenient to use RPRINT:
  13.  
  14. (1) The printer is shared by other PCs - either using a multi-port
  15.     printer buffer or a Local Area Network (LAN)- and it would be
  16.     unreasonable to connect it directly to the Series 3/MC/HC.
  17.  
  18. (2) You do not wish to disturb the connection between the PC and the
  19.     printer.
  20.  
  21. (3) You have already set up the serial connection to use RCom for
  22.     file transfer to the PC.
  23.  
  24. (4) If your PC is connected to more than one printer, and you wish to
  25.     be able to select which one the Series 3/MC/HC will use.
  26.  
  27. Note: it is also possible to print via RCom to a printer attached to
  28. your PC. To do this, set your Series 3/MC/HC to print to a file, and
  29. give the printer device on REM:: (such as REM::LPT1) as the `file' to
  30. use. This method may be slower than using RPRINT - especially when
  31. printing `justified' text from the Word processor on either computer.
  32. However, RCom can correct transmission errors, whereas RPRINT can
  33. only report them. Such errors may occasionally be caused by PC
  34. add-ons, such as some network card drivers.
  35.  
  36. Using RPRINT on Windows-based PCs
  37. =================================
  38.  
  39. 1. Set the correct printing settings in RCom Setup - the `Printer
  40. port', `Baud rate' and `Activity timeout'. (See the FURTHER NOTES
  41. section later at the end of this document for more information about
  42. Activity timeout.)
  43.  
  44. 2. Physically connect the Series 3/MC/HC to the PC exactly as for
  45. RCom.
  46.  
  47. 3. Double click on the RPrint icon in the Windows Program Manager to
  48. run RPRINT using the printing settings in RCom Setup.
  49.  
  50. 4. Follow the instructions that follow according to whether you have
  51. a Series 3/3a or MC linked to the PC.
  52.  
  53. 5. Press Control-C when you have finished to exit RPRINT.
  54.  
  55. Note: See the FURTHER NOTES section at the end of this document for
  56. details of how to suppress printer status messages.

  58. Series 3 users:
  59. ---------------

  61. Select the `Printer setup' option from the Special menu in the System
  62. screen (the `Printer' option on the Series 3a). In this dialog, set
  63. the `Printer device' line to `Serial'. 
  64.  
  65. Then press Tab on the `Serial characteristics' line and set the `Baud
  66. rate' to the `Baud rate' for printing that you set in RCom Setup.

  68. Select the `Remote link' option on the 'Special' menu and set 'Remote
  69. link' to 'Off'.

  71. Open the file that you wish to print.
  72.  
  73. Use the application's `Print setup' option to set the `Printer model'
  74. and the page layout desired.

  76. Use the `Print' option to print the file.
  77.  
  78. MC users
  79. --------
  80.  
  81. Select the `Print Setup' option from the `Options' menu in the System
  82. application to display the `Printer' dialog.
  83.  
  84. Set one of the configurations to output to Serial.
  85.  
  86. Click on the SET SERIAL... button and set the `Baud rate' to the
  87. `Baud rate' for printing that you set in RCom Setup.
  88.  
  89. Make sure that the remote link is set to `Off'.
  90.  
  91. You can now print as if the printer was directly connected to the MC
  92. by selecting the Print menu item in any application which can print.
  93. As far as the MC software is concerned, it is printing to a Serial
  94. printer.

  96. Using RPRINT on DOS-based PCs
  97. =============================
  98.  
  99. 1. Physically connect the Series 3/MC/HC to the PC exactly as for
  100. RCom.
  101.  
  102. 2. Make sure that the DOS prompt, not the RCom command prompt, is
  103. displayed and that the remote link is set to `Off' on the 
  104. Series 3/MC/HC.
  105.  
  106. 3. If the printer is connected to LPT1, the Series 3/MC/HC 3 is
  107. connected to COM1, and you wish to use 9600 as the `Baud rate' for
  108. printing and 2 seconds as the Activity timeout, you can now run RPRINT
  109. on the PC by typing:
  110.  
  111.   RPRINT
  112.  
  113. If you do not wish to run RPRINT using the default settings, you can
  114. use the following switches on the RPRINT command line:
  115.  
  116. /P to set the PC port to which the printer is attached
  117. /C to set the PC port to which the Series 3/MC/HC is attached
  118. /B to set the Baud rate for printing
  119. /T to set the Activity timeout
  120.  
  121. For example, to print to a printer attached to the PC port LPT2 from
  122. a Series 3 attached to COM2 at a baud rate of 4800 with an Activity
  123. timeout of 4 seconds, you would type:

  125. RPRINT /PLPT2 /CCOM2 /B4800 /T4
  126.  
  127. (Alternatively, you can edit the RCOM.INI file - stored in the
  128. directory in which you installed RCom - from which RPRINT takes its
  129. settings to include the settings that you wish to use.)

  177. Printing to a file on the PC

  180. You can also print to a file on the PC using, for example:

  184. Note that PRINT.LIS will be overwritten each time you print.

  186. To test the connection without wasting paper
  187. --------------------------------------------

  189.   RPRINT CON
  190.  
  191. CON is the DOS name for the console (screen). When you then print
  192. from the Series 3/MC/HC, you should see the output appear on the
  193. screen of the PC.

  195. FURTHER NOTES
  196. =============
  197.  
  198. Activity timeout
  199. ----------------
  200.  
  201. The Activity timeout option is provided for use with printers that
  202. are connected to the PC via a Local Area Network (LAN) where it is
  203. necessary to close and open the print device between each print job.
  204. It is used to specify an inactivity time-out in seconds. If there is
  205. no printing for this period, the print device is automatically
  206. closed.
  207.  
  208. If the Activity timeout setting is omitted, the print device is not
  209. automatically closed. You can close the print device manually by
  210. pressing any key on the PC keyboard, or by pressing Control-C to exit
  211. RPRINT.
  212.  
  213. Printer status messages
  214. -----------------------
  215.  
  216. If you wish to, you can suppress printer status messages.
  217.  
  218. On Windows-based PCs: highlight the RPrint icon in the Windows
  219. Program Manager and select the `Properties' option from the `File'
  220. menu. Add /Q to the end of the `Command line' line and press Enter.
  221. The next time that you use the RPrint program, printer status
  222. messages will be suppressed.

  224. On DOS-based PCs: type the /Q switch at the end of the command line to
  225. run RPRINT.

  227. PRINTING PROBLEMS
