Shuzzle © Copyright Ian Palmer 1994 =======
Introduction
------------
Shuzzle is a very simple puzzle, but one that can be highly infuriating. It
is based on a 4x4 grid with an extra square sticking out of the left hand
side. The puzzle involves 4 groups of 4 items, all items in a group have the
same properties, and no two groups have identicle properties.
There are two properties for groups, colour and behaviour. There are four
possible colours (red, green, blue and yellow) and three possible behaviours :
'Knight Moves' - The piece moves as a Knight does in chess. That is it
can move two squares in any horizontal or vertical
direction, and then one square in a direction
perpendicular to the initial direction (eg. up two then
left one, etc.)
'Two Step' - The piece can move two squares in any horizontal or
vertical direction.
'Transversal' - The piece can move any number of squares in a diagonal
direction.
When you start a new puzzle the computer arranges the pieces such that no two
pieces from the same group are in the same row, column or main diagonal; and
no piece is in the extra grid position. It then assigns the two properties to
each group, according to your configuration (see below).
The computer then shuffles the grid (using the rules for movement, see below)
and it is your task to follow the same rules to return the grid to a position
similar to the start position (ie. no two pieces from the same group in any
row, column or main diagonal and no piece in the extra grid position).
Rules of Movement
-----------------
A move is performed by moving a piece into the blank grid position. You can
move any peice, as long as doing so does not go against that pieces
predefined behaviour (see above).
Starting a game
---------------
When you run Shuzzle it installs itself on the iconbar. To start a game press
SELECT on the iconbar icon. There will be a short pause whilst the computer
randomly shuffles the grid, and then the grid will be displayed.
To give up any puzzle and start a new one select the 'New Game' option from
the main menu.
How to make a move
------------------
To make life easier you do not need to work out which pieces can be moved at
any one time, the computer highlights the possible pieces in the grid. To
make a move simply click the mouse pointer over the piece you wish to move.
Finishing the game
------------------
When you have arranged the pieces such that no two pieces from the same group
lie in the same row, column or main diagonal the computer will place the word
'Done' in the extra grid position and will also stop marking possible pieces
to move. To start a new game either click SELECT on the iconbar icon or
select the 'New Game' option on the menu.
Puzzle Options (Configuration)
------------------------------
There are a few puzzle options which can alter how hard the puzzle is. To
open the configuration window click ADJUST on the iconbar icon.
The first option is the number of moves the computer performs during the
shuffle. The default is 100, a lower number will generally make the puzzle a
little easier, a higher number will make it slightly harder.
The next option available is the number of colours that are used when
assigning properties to the groups of items. The deault is 4, thus no two
groups have the same colour (and thus can be easily distinguished at a
glance).
Setting this option to 3 will mean that two groups will have the same colour
(but will be guarenteed to have different behaviours). This means that you
will have to work out which of the visually identical items belong to which
group.
Setting the option to 2 means that there will only be two colours used, thus
there will be two groups of one colour and two of the other. Again the two
groups displayed the same will have differing behavours.
The final option is that of assigning colours randomly. If this is not set
then (in a 4 colour game) the initial position will always be :
Blue Red Green Yellow
Green Yellow Blue Red
Yellow Green Red Blue
Red Blue Yellow Green
You can also configure an alternative to plain colours to represent the
tiles, there are 7 sets of tiles available, 'Colours' the default, 'Red
Dwarf' characters from the TV series, two sets of four cartoon drawings,
a set of silhouettes and two sets of Star Trek The Next Generation
pictures.
Finally you can save you configuration for future use using the 'Save'
option.
