  4. The demo files in the Serenade package were supplied by Words & Music and
  5. come from our large collection of MIDI files. We have selected a wide range
  6. of material and, as you can see - and hear! - Serenade can be used for all
  7. types of music.

  9. This document contains more information about the files and how to get the
  10. most out of them quickly. You may like to print it out for easy reference.

  13. Getting Started

  15. All our files are supplied in Standard MIDI File format (Clares may have
  16. changed the format of the demo files to Serenade format). This format is
  17. very useful for transferring files between different sequencers and even
  18. between different computers.
  19.  
  20. Some of the files have been mapped to GM (General MIDI) so if you have a GM
  21. synthesiser you can 'load and go' without having to enter Program Changes or
  22. select suitable sounds on your musical instrument. If you don't have a GM
  23. instrument, don't worry. All the tracks in the files are named to indicate
  24. the instrument used.

  26. To get a file up and running quickly, assign all the tracks (except drums!)
  27. to a piano sound. Then substitute other instruments either by selecting them
  28. on your musical instrument or by inserting Program Changes into the music.
  29. Alternatively you can use Serenade's Track Sheet Parameters to choose
  30. different instruments. You may then wish to make more subtle changes to the
  31. music by adjusting volume and velocity levels and pan settings.

  34. Standard MIDI Files
  35.  
  36. All programs, including sequencers, save their data in their own special
  37. format. This allows them to use whatever features they wish as no other
  38. program is going to have to interpret it. In the music world, this restricts
  39. music files to the sequencer they were created on.
  40.  
  41. The MIDI File Standard was developed to allow music to be ported from one
  42. sequencer to another, even to a sequencer on another computer. Most of the
  43. major and current sequencers handle Standard MIDI Files very well although
  44. anomalies can occur in certain programs and on certain computers.

  47. GM/GS - What it's all about...
  48.  
  49. You can load a MIDI File into your sequencer and play back the notes but
  50. unless you use the same musical equipment as the person who arranged the
  51. file, the sounds will be totally different.
  52.  
  53. GM (General MIDI) seeks to overcome this problem by specifying a list of
  54. sounds which will respond to certain Program Change numbers. For example,
  55. Program 1 (or 0 depending on whether your system counts from 1-128 or 0-127)
  56. selects a Grand Piano, 15 selects Tubular Bells, 41 selects a Violin and so
  57. on.

  59. GM also uses Controller messages for effects such as Pan, Volume, Sustain
  60. and so on, although most of these messages are standard MIDI messages which
  61. non-GM instruments also respond to.

  63. Roland developed a super-set of GM called GS which uses extra Control
  64. messages for Reverb and Chorus and which allows access to variations on the
  65. main (or Capital) set of tones. If an instrument doesn't have these
  66. variations it falls back to the Capital tones so the result should still be
  67. close to the original.

  69. Most modern synthesisers have a Drum Voice which turns the keyboard into a
  70. drum kit. The GM specification includes a Drum Map which determines the drum
  71. sounds which are assigned to the notes (technically, the MIDI Note Numbers).

  119. Billy Joel's Root Beer Rag and many more.

  121. This collection really makes your 'Piano' talk. We like playing them using a
  122. Honky Tonk piano sound - or try using two different pianos and detuning
  123. them!

  125. Christmas MIDI Song Collection
  126.  
  127. The Christmas MIDI Song Collection contains over 100 tunes for the festive
  128. season on disc in MIDI file format. There are Christmas songs, Carols and
  129. medleys plus festive classical pieces by Bach, Beethoven and other great
  130. composers. It contains over 600K of data - hours of listening pleasure.

  132. Keep on Drummin'
  133.  
  134. Keep on Drummin' is a collection of 160 drum patterns on disc in MIDI File
  135. Format. They are arranged into 16 Styles:-

  142. As well as containing a collection of 'Killer Grooves', there are also lots
  143. of good, useable, down-to-Earth patterns suitable for a wide range of songs
  144. and tunes.

  146. There are two and four-bar patterns plus many which are 12 or 16 bars long,
  147. making it very easy to select individual bars for assembling your own drum
  148. track.

  152. Several patterns also have an accompanying bass line which suggests the sort
  153. of music lines which work well with them. Use them 'as is' or edit them to
  154. suit your own music.

  156. The technical bits...
  157.  
  158. The drum pattern files are configured to the General MIDI (GM) standard
  159. which ensures compatibility with the greatest number of synths and
  160. expanders. These include RolandÕs Sound Canvas range (whose drums are based
  161. on RolandÕs MT-32), the Yamaha TG100, KorgÕs 03R/W and so on. But the
  162. patterns will work with any instrument which has built-in drum sounds.

  164. The package contains full written documentation including an explanation of
  165. GM and drum maps. ThereÕs a GM drum map diagram for the drums used in the
  166. patterns along with a full explanation of how to use them with other, non-GM
  167. equipment - don't worry, it's easy!
