Shuggy by Werewolf Software (version 2)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a demonstration version of Shuggy which gives only a tiny taste of
the full game.
Shuggy is a graphical arcade adventure game for RISC OS computers. You play
a young elf whose quest is to save a fantasy world from its evil overlord.
To complete your quest you will salvage savings, prospect pitch-black pits,
liberate locked up locals and dethrone a despot!
Extra features in the full game include: many different buildings and
locations to traverse, and a varied collection of characters to interact with.
The full game also includes saving your position which allows you to resume
whenever you like.
Instructions
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your aim in this short demonstration is just to escape from your current
location so you can complete your quest in the full game.
To load the demo, simply double click on the !ShuggyDem application. It
will load and install an icon on the icon bar. By clicking MENU over this
icon, you can bring up the main menu. From here you can select to set
options or start a new game.
To start playing Shuggy, select the 'New Game' option from the main menu or
click SELECT on the icon bar icon.
An intro screen will be shown. This can be skipped by pressing escape.
You then arrive on the starting screen of the demo. You may move around
using the keys defined for LEFT, RIGHT, and UP.
The key defined for ACTION will bring you to the objects box. If you were
standing over an object at the time that object will also be picked up.
From this box you can examine objects you are carrying, use them, drop them,
or simply do nothing. This is controlled by the keys defined for UP, DOWN,
and ACTION.
If you are over something of importance and you press the ACTION key Shuggy
will make an observation. For example if you stand in front of the chest and
press ACTION Shuggy tells you that it is locked.
If at any point you wish to return to the desktop simply press the key
defined for ESCAPE. If you then click SELECT on the icon bar icon you will
resume the game from where you left off. If you wish to start a new game
select the 'New Game' menu item.
Options
~~~~~~~
By selecting the 'Options...' menu item or clicking with ADJUST on the icon
bar icon the Options window is opened. From here you can redefine the keys
or change the settings for sound in the game. For help on this use Acorn's
Interactive Help application which this program supports.
If you do not define your own keys the default set are used. These are:
Z Left Move Shuggy Left
X Right Move Shuggy Right
' Up Jump / Move selection up
/ Down Move selection down
RETURN Action Bring up object box / Make selection
ESCAPE Escape Return to the desktop
Resolution
~~~~~~~~~~
Shuggy runs in two modes. High res mode is at a resolution of 640x480 and
includes smooth scrolling between screens and a fancy font. Low res mode is
at a resolution of 640x256 and by default has the scrolling and font
switched off.
When you load, the game automatically selects which mode to use. If your
monitor is capable of displaying 640x480, and there is enough memory, high
res mode is picked, otherwise the game loads in low res mode.
By pressing down ALT while loading the game you can choose the alternative
mode. For low res users this means that the scrolling and fancy font are
turned back on. For high res users the game is forced into low resolution
mode with the extra features turned off.
