More
(Panthera leo)
Several thousand years ago lions were
found all over [700Europe] and the Middle
East. Now, lions are found in [500Africa],
and live mainly in the grasslands.
The males are about 3m long (including
tail), with females a little shorter.
Shoulder height is about 110cm.
Hunting by day or night, lions eat
[550ungulates], but they will also eat
rodents, hares & reptiles.
Mass: 122-240 kg
Life span: 15 years

Lion (part 2)
Lion2,400,400
Lion,400,400
Nomore
Lions live together in a family group
called a pride. A pride includes several
adult males, many females and cubs,
some of which may be nearly fully grown.
Most of the hunting in the pride is done
by the females (lionesses). They usually
work as a group, surrounding prey and
then moving in.
The males defend the pride from males
outside the pride - the mane makes
them look bigger and more powerful,
even though it is just fur.

(Panthera tigris)
One of the most powerful of all cats,
with a coat ranging in colour from
orange/brown through to cream
coloured (this is sometimes called a
white tiger).
Tigers live in jungle, forests and rocky
areas, and are mainly nocturnal hunters.
Prey includes [550ungulates], monkeys and
somtimes birds and frogs.
Mass: 130-260 kg Gestation: 103 days
Life span: 15 years

Tiger (part 2)
Tiger,400,400
None
Nomore
Tigers have stripes to help them blend
into the tall grasses where they live. A
tiger in tall grass is very difficult to
see and this helps the tiger stalk its
prey.
It can move very silently because of its
padded feet, and when it is close enough
will pounce.
Small prey is killed with a bite to the
back of the neck, but larger prey is
suffocated.

Nomore
(Panthera pardus)
A powerful cat with a very long tail
Sometimes this cat has a black coat
and so is called a black panther, even
though it is really just a black coated
leopard.
Living in all sorts of regions, right up
into snowy mountains, it hunts in the
morning, late afternoon and at night on
all types of deer and antelope, baboons,
jackal, hares and large birds.
Mass: 30-70 kg Gestation: 90-105 days
Life span: 12 years

Jaguar,400,400

Nomore
(Panthera onca)
The Jaguar is a heavily built compact
cat with powerful legs and a large,
roundish head. The body colour can be
anything from yellowish brown through
to browny red.
The Jaguar likes to live near water in
tropical forest and savannah. Hunting
at dawn and dusk, prey includes
capybara (a large rodent), deer, fish,
monkeys, turtles & frogs. Although the
Jaguar is a good climber, it usually
attacks prey on the ground.
Location: Central & South [705America]

Snow Leopard
SnowLeo,400,400
None
Nomore
(Panthera unica)
Living in the high mountains, above
the tree line, this cat eats [550ungulates]
and large birds. Because it lives in
moutain regions it has large paws and
very powerful legs.
As it lives in parts of Asia difficult
to reach, little is known about this rare
cat. These cats spend much of their time
on their own, and unlike other big
cats, do not roar.
Gestation: 98-103 days
Life span: 12 years

Nomore
(Neofelis nebulosa)
Although classed as a big cat, the
Clouded leopard is really somewhere
between a big and small cat.
This cat has a compact powerful
body, with short legs and a long tail.
It spends much of its time in the trees,
hunting monkeys, birds and squirrels.
In fact it is such a good climber that
it can run down trees head first.
Mass: 15-20 kg
Life span: 15 years

Cheetah (part 2)
Cheetah2,400,400
Cheetah,400,400
Nomore
Although Cheetah prey on many other
animals the cubs still face many
dangers.
[020Lions] will kill Cheetah cubs if they
get the chance, but do not eat them. This
is to stop the Cheetahs (when they get
older) from catching prey that the [020Lions]
might catch.
In this photograph a Cheetah has found
her cub killed by a [020Lion].

Domestic Cat

Nomore
The domestic cat is thought to be
decended from the African wild cat,
and was kept by ancient peoples to
keep rodents away from stored crops.
The name probably comes from the
nubian (region in [500Africa]) Kadis, and
has similar sounding names in many
different languages: katt, katze, Kot,
Kots, Chat & gatto.
Cats have had a special place in history;
they were worshipped in ancient egypt,
and have had special laws in other
countries.
