  1.                              Guide for Cloze
  2.                              ===============

  4. This application is shareware - you may evaluate it for 30 days. If you
  5. continue to use it beyond this time then you must register!
  6.  
  7. Introduction
  8. ------------
  9. Cloze is a word puzzle. A passage of text has words, or letters, removed
  10. from it. The user must recreate the passage by entering words they think
  11. are present in the text. The font Corpus.Medium must have been 'seen'.
  12.  
  13. Using Cloze
  14. -----------
  15. Load Cloze in the normal way. When you click on the icon on the icon bar
  16. the Cloze window will open, with icons on the right side. The large white
  17. rectangle is where the text is displayed, once you have decided what you
  18. want removed - words or letters. Each dash on screen represents a letter.
  19. Cloze uses a default passage of text when you first load it, see later if
  20. you wish to change it.
  21.  
  22. Guess a word by entering it into the text entry box (top left of window)
  23. and then clicking on the 'Try word' button. If the word is present in the
  24. text it will be revealed each time it appears.
  25.  
  26. An additional help feature is provided - individual letters can be revealed
  27. (providing the test type you selected hid words not letters) by clicking on
  28. the relevant letter on the row of letters near the top of the window.
  29.  
  30. Icons explained
  31. ---------------
  32. The five icons on the right side of the window do the following:
  33. 1) Toggle between word reveal on/off - if you click on a ---- word on the
  34.    main area while word reveal is on, the word is placed in the text entry
  35.    box in the top left corner
  36. 2) Test type - restarts the test again, allowing you to change the test
  37. 3) Files - click here to load a new passage of text
  38. 4) Reveal - allows you to give up and reveal all the text
  39. 5) Print - you can print an A4 sized summary report
  40.  
  41. Menu Options
  42. ------------
  43. Clicking Menu over the main window brings up a range of options - most are
  44. pretty obvious as to what they do, the rest are explained below:
  45.  
  46. a) Reset Files Path - if you have changed the directory used for word sets
  47.    (see below) then this will reset it to its previous setting
  48. b) Save New Path - again, if you change the directory used for word sets
  49.    then selecting this item makes your change permanent. Each time you load
  50.    Cloze your new directory will be used
  51. c) Save As Default - makes the current set of words the default one; ie the
  52.    set of words used each time Cloze is loaded
  53. d) Swap & Slide determine how letters are moved when you drag one of them
  54.    to a new position
  55.  
  56. Test Sets
  57. ---------
  58. If you select the files icon then a directory called Words (inside the main
  59. Cloze directory) is scanned. You can add further tests to this directory if
  60. you wish - next time you start up Cloze the extra tests will be detected.
  61. However you can set up a completely different directory if you wish by
  62. simply dragging a new directory onto the main window. If you want to make
  63. this directory permanent (ie the one used each time Cloze is used) then
  64. choose the 'Save New Path' item on the Cloze main menu.

  66. Tests can also be loaded directly into Cloze by dragging the word set (which
  67. is just an Edit file) onto the main window.

  69. To create your own tests try loading one of the existing ones. They are just
  70. Edit text files - do not worry about word wrap, just type them in. Keep in
  71. mind that Cloze will only display fifteen lines of up to 38 characters so
  72. keep your passage fairly short. Also try and leave a space after a full stop
  73. or comma.

  75. ** At the end of your passage make sure the cursor is on a blank line below
  76. the last line of text. If you don't then Cloze may 'hang' when you use your
  77. test **

  79. Registration
  80. ------------
  81. The registration fee for Cloze is 3.99 - this will keep you informed about
  82. upgrades as they become available as well as removing the 'unregistered'
  83. windows that pop up. You will also receive a simple editor so you can
  84. modify the word databases. To register make a cheque to M. Smith for 3.99
  85. and print clearly your address as well as who you want the program to be
  86. registered to. Include the name of the application on your note (ie Cloze).

  116. Shown below is a brief description (E & O.E) of applications by the same
  117. author. Virtually all are of an educational nature, running under the WIMP.
  118. Most work on RISC OS 2, all work on RISC OS 3.
  119.  
  120. Geography:
  121. * Where & Grid - Designed for Key Stage 3, Where & Grid are two
  122.   complementary applications. They test locations of countries (Europe &
  123.   Africa), towns, counties (UK only) rivers, montains, bearings, four and
  124.   six figure grid references. Currently the set covers the UK, Europe
  125.   & Africa.
  126. * OS_Symbols - Designed for Key Stage 3, OS_Symbols tests knowledge of a
  127.   range of OS Map symbols. A particular symbol is displayed and the correct
  128.   description must be found - time limits can be set.
  129. * Forecast - Produce your own weather maps just like on TV with symbols and
  130.   isobars. Variety of maps supplied; wind chill can be determined.
  131. * Predict - Predict the weather for the next 24 hours by supplying data
  132.   such are pressure and wind direction.
  133. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game, where all the words are connected
  134.   with Key Satge 3 geography.
  135.  
  136. Science:
  137. * Circuit symbols - Tests knowledge of circuit and electronic symbols
  138.   against the clock.
  139. * Assist: Science AT4 - Produce a wide range of worksheets for topics on 
  140.   AT4. Each topic has a wide range categories including word searches,
  141.   crosswords, True or False, Anagrams and Missing words. Worksheets are
  142.   created from a databank, so they are different each time they are printed.
  143. * Assist: Equations - Produce four types of worksheets based on chemical
  144.   equations. Categories are Balancing equations, Missing product, Missing
  145.   reactant and Right or Wrong. Because a databank is used, worksheets are
  146.   different each time they are printed.
  147. * Assist: Periodic Table - Print a customised Periodic Table. Displayed data
  148.   can include mass number, density, boiling point, melting point,
  149.   radioactive isotopes, atomic radius, atomic volume, covalent radius,
  150.   ionisation energy, & electronegativity. Graphs and periodic trends can
  151.   also be produced.
  152. * Periodic Table - Click on a particular element to display relevant data. 
  153. * ArcMedia: Space - A simple hypermedia system on the Solar System. Designed
  154.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. Variety of NASA images.
  155. * Multiple Choice Chemistry - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  156.   pictures) covering GCSE Chemistry. Time limits can be set.
  157. * Multiple Choice Physics - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  158.   pictures) covering GCSE Physics. Time limits can be set.

  160. Word Puzzles:
  161. * Word Search - Application for creating word searches. Control over grid
  162.   size, displayed fonts, grid shape & borders is provided.
  163. * Do Search - Compliments the Word Search application. Data files from Word
  164.   Search can be dragged into Do Search, allowing the word search to be done
  165.   on screen
  166. * X-Word - Creates and prints crosswords from words and clues provided by
  167.   the user. Control over grid size, displayed fonts & borders is provided.
  168. * Do-Word - Compliments the X-Word application. Data files from X-Word can
  169.   be dragged into Do Word, allowing the crossword to be done on screen.
  170. * Anagram - Reconstruct the jumbled up word by solid dragging of the
  171.   letters. Hint feature is also provided.
  172. * Guess - Guess the word chosen by the computer. Hint featu
