Edward, king of the English, being without an heir, sent Robert,
archbishop of Canterbury, to the duke, with a message appointing
the duke as heir to the kingdom which God had entrusted to him.
He also, at a later time, sent Harold, the greatest of all the
counts in the kingdom alike in riches and honour and power.
This he did in order that Harold might guarantee the crown to
the duke by his fealty and confirm the same with an oath
according to Christian usage.

loved William as a brother or a son, established him as heir
with a stronger pledge than ever before......He dispatched Harold
to William in order that he might confirm this promise by an oath.
Harold swore fealty to the duke.........(he promised he would) employ
all his influence and wealth to ensure that after the death of
King Edward the kingdom of England should be confirmed in the
possession of the duke.....
