  4. Introduction
  5. ------------
  6. Where is designed with Geography Key Stage 3 in mind, testing knowledge of
  7. geographical features such as cities, rivers etc for a particular region of
  8. the world. Between one and five features can be tested at once, as well as
  9. varying the number of questions and playing against the clock. Other regions
  10. of the world are available, apart from this one, details of which appear
  11. later in this document.

  13. Using Where
  14. -----------
  15. Load Where in the normal way. Clicking on its icon on the icon bar will open
  16. the Where window, with a tool pane on the left hand side. The icons on the
  17. tool pane are:
  18.  
  19. Flag - starts a test
  20. Question mark - sets the number of questions
  21. Hourglass - turns the timer (shown in the top right corner of the Where
  22. window) on/off
  23. Trash - aborts a test
  24.  
  25. The Where window is split into three sections, the largest of which is the
  26. map area. To the left of this is the Selection section; clicking on a
  27. particular feature toggles it on/off. Note that once a test has been
  28. started then this section becomes greyed out/unselectable.

  30. Below is the Question section where the question and five possible
  31. alternatives are shown. When a test is running (started by clicking on the
  32. flag) an answer can be selected by clicking on the letter (A,B,C etc). If
  33. your answer is wrong you must keep going until you find the correct one. The
  34. final 'score' is based on the number of attempts you make before finding
  35. the correct answer.

  39. If you would like a particular region of the world to be covered that is
  40. not already done so, then drop me a line.
  41.  
  42. Registration
  43. ------------
  44. This software is shareware - you try it before you buy it. You may use it
  45. for up to 30 days to evaluate its potential. If you continue to use it
  46. after then you must register it by sending a cheque for 4.99 to the address
  47. below. Print your name and address clearly, state who/what organisation
  48. you want the application registerd to, the name of the application (ie
  49. Where) & which region (UK, Europe or Africa) you require.
  50.  
  51. By registering you will receive a new copy of the application, with the
  52. unregistered windows that pop up removed. The companion application 'Grid'
  53. will also be sent to you. You can also be kept up to date with new region
  54. sets as they become available. There is nothing to force you to register,
  55. but if you continue to use it beyond 30 days you are being dishonest and
  56. jepardise future releases.

  86. Shown below is a brief description (E & O.E) of applications by the same
  87. author. Virtually all are of an educational nature, running under the WIMP.
  88. Most work on RISC OS 2, all work on RISC OS 3.
  89.  
  90. Geography:
  91. * Where & Grid - Designed for Key Stage 3, Where & Grid are two
  92.   complementary applications. They test locations of countries (Europe &
  93.   Africa), towns, counties (UK only) rivers, montains, bearings, four and
  94.   six figure grid references. Currently the set covers the UK, Europe
  95.   & Africa.
  96. * OS_Symbols - Designed for Key Stage 3, OS_Symbols tests knowledge of a
  97.   range of OS Map symbols. A particular symbol is displayed and the correct
  98.   description must be found - time limits can be set.
  99. * Forecast - Produce your own weather maps just like on TV with symbols and
  100.   isobars. Variety of maps supplied; wind chill can be determined.
  101. * Predict - Predict the weather for the next 24 hours by supplying data
  102.   such are pressure and wind direction.
  103. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game, where all the words are connected
  104.   with Key Satge 3 geography.
  105.  
  106. Science:
  107. * Circuit symbols - Tests knowledge of circuit and electronic symbols
  108.   against the clock.
  109. * Assist: Science AT4 - Produce a wide range of worksheets for topics on 
  110.   AT4. Each topic has a wide range categories including word searches,
  111.   crosswords, True or False, Anagrams and Missing words. Worksheets are
  112.   created from a databank, so they are different each time they are printed.
  113. * Assist: Equations - Produce four types of worksheets based on chemical
  114.   equations. Categories are Balancing equations, Missing product, Missing
  115.   reactant and Right or Wrong. Because a databank is used, worksheets are
  116.   different each time they are printed.
  117. * Assist: Periodic Table - Print a customised Periodic Table. Displayed data
  118.   can include mass number, density, boiling point, melting point,
  119.   radioactive isotopes, atomic radius, atomic volume, covalent radius,
  120.   ionisation energy, & electronegativity. Graphs and periodic trends can
  121.   also be produced.
  122. * Periodic Table - Click on a particular element to display relevant data. 
  123. * ArcMedia: Space - A simple hypermedia system on the Solar System. Designed
  124.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. Variety of NASA images.
  125. * Multiple Choice Chemistry - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  126.   pictures) covering GCSE Chemistry. Time limits can be set.
  127. * Multiple Choice Physics - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  128.   pictures) covering GCSE Physics. Time limits can be set.

  130. Word Puzzles:
  131. * Word Search - Application for creating word searches. Control over grid
  132.   size, displayed fonts, grid shape & borders is provided.
  133. * Do Search - Compliments the Word Search application. Data files from Word
  134.   Search can be dragged into Do Search, allowing the word search to be done
  135.   on screen
  136. * X-Word - Creates and prints crosswords from words and clues provided by
  137.   the user. Control over grid size, displayed fonts & borders is provided.
  138. * Do-Word - Compliments the X-Word application. Data files from X-Word can
  139.   be dragged into Do Word, allowing the crossword to be done on screen.
  140. * Anagram - Reconstruct the jumbled up word by solid dragging of the
  141.   letters. Hint feature is also provided.
  142. * Guess - Guess the word chosen by the computer. Hint feature provided.
  143. * Bottle - Hangman type game, but with bottles. Hints also provided.
  144. * Cloze - Removes words (user can determine how many) from a passage of
  145.   text. User must then reconstruct the entire text by entering words into
  146.   gaps in the text. Add your own passages of text easily. Summary can be
  147.   printed.
  148.  
  149. Picture Puzzles:
  150. * Blocksaw - Jigsaw type application, using blocks for the pieces. Accepts
  151.   sprite and draw files. Size of the grid can be varied to cover a wide
  152.   range of abilities.
  153. * Tile - Picture is broken into a series of tiles, and then the tiles mixed
  154.   up. The picture must be recreated by swapping tiles. Uses sprite or draw
  155.   files; allows the number of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty
  156.   levels.
  157. * Slide - Sliding block puzzle. Uses sprite or draw files; allows the number
  158.   of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty levels.
  159. * Rows n Cols - Recreate a picture (either sprite or draw) by sliding rows
  160.   or columns into their correct positions.
  161.  
  162. Miscellaneous:
  163. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game for up to three players. Database
  164.   can be easily modified to include your own words.
  165. * Multiple Choice (General) - Multiple choice quiz, some with pictures. Many
  166.   general knowledge topics covered. Editor also available so you can create
  167.   your own tests.
  168. * Multiple Choice Maths - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  169.   pictures) covering GCSE Maths. Time limits can be set.
  170. * ArcMedia (Cats) - A simple hypermedia system on the Cat Family. Designed
  171.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. 
  172. * Word Tester - Tests knowledge of the correct wo
