README -- for Project Gutenberg Webster's Unabridged Dictionary
Tagged version.
Comments as of August 8, 1996 [several deleted in September by mh]
------------------------------------------------------------
The accompanying files are for use with the electronic version
of the "Project Gutenberg Webster's Unabridge Dictionary."
This electronic version has been tagged with field marks to make it
more easily interpretable by computer. This version is copyrighted by
MICRA, Inc., Plainfield, NJ, USA. The dictionary file may be used freely
for personal use or for research. Any use of the dictionary or any
part exceeding one per cent of the total, in a product for sale,
requires written permission of MICRA Inc. The files may be distributed
freely, provided that they are not modified and the copyright and
explanatory headers are not removed.
The set of tags and their frequency of occurence are found in
the file "webmarks.lst". An explanation of the most common tags
is in the file "tagset.web".
This file is in ASCII format, but the special characters used
to represent non-ASCII fonts are coded in one of two formats.
A description of these special character symbols needed to reproduce
the text of the dictionary as printed, is in the file
"webfont.asc". The fonts provided for viewing would only work in
a DOS environment, and many symbols are not coded in the 256
symbol limit of the DOS operating system.
If all files in this directory are present in one local
directory under DOS3.1 or higher, the fonts described in the
"fonthex.asc" file may be visualized by giving the command
"font". To remove the font, use the command "univga /u".
The fonts are loaded using a font loader developed in Russia,
so there will be some graphic characters displayed when
the fonts are loaded. I have not been able to determine the
proprietary/public domain status of this font loader, so itr
should not be redistributed at present.
This dictionary of itself is only an historical curiosity,
but could serve as the nucleus for construction of a useful
encyclopedic dictionary, using articles submitted by anyone
willing to share their knowledge freely on the internet.
Contributions of effort are required, from simple tasks such as
proofreading, to service as editor for a specialized branch
of knowledge; tasks such as disambiguating words in definitions
may be performed in small segments of time. Anyone willing to
spend any effort on this project should contact:
