!News, version 1.03 (2nd November 1994) © Timothy Kimber
This file holds the full instructions, the "Quick Startup"
guide can be found in the !Help file.
Brief Description
=================
This program is an NNTP based offline newsreader designed to
allow easy, user friendly access to the Usenet newsgroups.
It allows posting and replys to postings on the various
newsgroups in an as easy as possible way. It requires little
configuration and (nearly) no technical expertise to run
(I hope).
Features
========
• Doesn't require any programs to be run before reading
news, or after posting a message.
{ It accesses the files directly from !MailDir }
• Adds the signature file to the post automatically
• Full quoting of messages being replied to.
• Has no limit on the number of articles in a newsgroup.
• Uses the ExtEdit protocol to edit a posting, allowing you
to use your favorite editor.
• Correctly replies to posts with a Followup-To: line.
• Can run from any filing system.
• Loads the entire file, so that the harddisc is not thrashed
to pieces and it loads extremely fast.
Disadvantages
=============
• Requires as much memory as the size of the DemNews file,
plus 160K for the program, plus 2% of DemNews file for an
index. (eg 500K newsfile requires 500K+160K+10K = 670K)
Features (aka Bugs)
===================
• Sometimes, a few articles can be grouped into a wierd
group, this happens when there are multiple entries on the
Newsgroups: line, and this article appears before the ones
in the "normal" group.
• After a mode change from a large mode to a small
mode, the windows can be separated. Clicking on
the title bar fixes this.
• No checking is done for disc space when copying
the news file into a subdirectory of !News, this
can cause problems if !TCPIPUser and !News are
on different filing systems.
Instructions
============
These instructions are designed to provide a step by step
guide to running the program, rather than a feature by feature
guide.
1. Double click on the !News application.
The "Load file" window will open, and a list of available
newsfiles will be displayed, initally this will display
"folder.DemNews"
Options available:
Auto copy - automatically rename the DemNews file into
!News.news with a unique name (eg 150994)
Auto Index - automatically save the index generated with
the newsfile, so that the index does not have
to be calculated again (and read/unread articles
are stored).
Errors:
• List displays "<none>"
1. There is no downloaded news to be displayed, or
2. The filer has not seen the !MailDir application (It
is part of !TCPIP), or
3. Your downloaded news is not called DemNews - edit the
config file to change this.
• "Insufficent memory - Current=nnnnK, Needed=yyyyK"
This means that the computer currently does not have enough
memory to load the DemNews file.
Possible solutions
- Quit some other applications,
- Reboot the machine, (skipping any autobooting
applications refer to the User Guide)
- Use an editor to cut the DemNews file into 2 (or more)
parts.
- Use the SplitNews file (inside the !News application)
which will automatically cut a file into multiple parts
2. Double click on the newsfile that you wish to load,
The main window will open, and an hourglass will be
displayed for a short while and then the list of groups
will be displayed in the top window.
Errors:
• "The index file appears to be corrupt..." this means
that the checks in the index file have failed, it will
be deleted and recalculated. If the Auto Index option
is set then the new index will be saved.
3. Double click on the newsgroup that you wish to view, and
then on the article that you wish to view.
4. To view the next article, either Doubleclick on the next
article to be viewed, or press Ctrl-N.
The next article will be displayed, and the top window
scrolls down if required.
5. To create a user select {Iconbar menu} ⇨ Create User
and enter your alias (username) in the first field
(eg tim@mobius.demon.co.uk). Press RETURN and enter your
real name in the name field (eg Timothy Kimber). In the
last field enter the location of your sig file, if this
is blank, or left at the default value then no sig file
will be included when you post an article.
6. Next select the user to be used when posting, choose
the correct user in the {Iconbar menu} ⇨ User ⇨ {user list}
The Create User menu option changes to Amend User, and the
user details can be amended.
(to create another user - deselect the current user and
the Create User will become available).
7. Next check on the {Window menu} ⇨ Options ⇨ Site name menu
that the site name is correct for your site, edit it if
your site name is different.
8. Save the options and the users in the Config file by
selecting the {Window menu} ⇨ Options ⇨ Save Options
9. To post a reply to an article, press the menu button, and
select "Post Reply".
When the window appears, cut out any quoted lines that you
do not wish to quote and type in your follow up text.
Then
A) If using a ExtEdit aware editor (it will say
(News).Post.Article at the top of the editor window)
then close the window and reply "Save" to the
Save,Discard,Cancel query.
Otherwise
B) If a "Drag here" window appears, then drag the
save icon into the "Drag here" window.
10. To post an entirely new article, then press the menu
button and select "Post", fill in the relevant fields in
the header (Newsgroups, Subject, and Organisation), the
text and then save as in step (4).
11. To view articles with/without headers then press the menu
button, and select {Window menu} ⇨ Options ⇨ Headers
