V.terbo mini-FAQ v0.1
================ AKA what speed will I get? ----
As you all know, the Energis vPoPs have V.terbo modems connected to them.
These are US Robotics V.terbo, driven at 38400bps. The normal V.terbo
speed is 19200bps, but USR have their own proprietry extension which
takes this to 21600bps.
This mini-FAQ lists most of the current high-performance modems and the
expected connect speeds. It is not a definitive list, and not necessarily
entirely accurate. However, based on the information I have, I believe it
is correct. Let me know if something is wrong.
Known modems which connect at 21600bps
--------------------------------------
US Robotics Courier V.terbo
US Robotics Courier V.34 (V.Everything)
Known modems which connect at 19200bps
--------------------------------------
Sonix Volante
Multitech V.34/V.terbo
Other V.terbo modems, possibly.
All those which won't handle more than 14400bps
-----------------------------------------------
US Robotics Sportster V.34 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<----------- TAKE NOTE!!!!
Rockwell chipset-based V.34/V.FC modems including:
all Hayes modems
most el-cheapo import modems
Psion Dacom
Zoom V.34
V.32bis modems :)
Modems which, depending on the advert you read, may support V.terbo
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Pace Microlin fx 34
Pace Linnet 34 fx
DFI F1128V+
Andest Rocket Platinum
US Robotics Worldport
Notes
-----
Very early US Robotics Sportsters *did* support V.terbo, but this was
quickly removed.
V.terbo was never an official ITU-T standard and implementations may
vary between manufacturers. There is no guarantee of compatability.
V.34 includes 21600 and 19200bps as fallback speeds. However, the
negotiation phase is completely different, and it will not train to
V.terbo unless the modem specifically supports V.terbo.
The above list does not imply any recommendations. I want a free Courier
V.34 before I will make one :)
