as mentioned in !Help, Paul Denize wrote me that (the old, v1.0) !Filer- 'crashed' the
machine when it's been shut down with S.Hickinbottom's !ShutDown application.
he also gave the error's line number and suggested a fix (see there).
with my 'standard' desktop setup by my !Boot appl (modules: Bits, Quitter, fat IconSwitch,
MouseAxess (used to be MoveWindow); !PtrCopy, !Memphis, ro2 !TinyDirs, hacked !ModeUtil,
!MBF and !Filer-) i NEVER got a shutdown-crash, no matter what and how many has been
running before, but ALMOST ALWAYS the petstf (press excape to start the filer) error window
prior to the nycsotc (now you can switch off the computer) window. sometimes the annoying
petstf doesn't come.
but i too got crashes when *Configure'd NoBoot (i.e. only !Boot.!Boot has been obeyed when
the Filer saw the root dir of the hard disc; just some system vars are defined there) and
!Filer- 2.0 + some other apps were running and i did a 'normal' risc os 3.11 shutdown: the
nycsotc window didn't appear and the machine 'hung' (you'd need a ctrl-break if you wanted
to restart). Stuart's !ShutDown worked fine all the time though (but i haven't done heavy
testing cause i use ro3's built-in shutdown).
i've been trying to reconstruct that random 'application configuration' to find out
whether !Filer- was the offender but did not succeed.
if !Filer- is the bad guy then i strongly suspect the bug in the FiPiFi module
(!Filer-.FiPiFiSrc is the source code) but i could be wrong...
should you find it please write/email me (address in !Help).
thanks and have fun (read Stuff.StyleGuide for instance)
