User Guide for FontPaint version 1.00
-------------------------------------
This software is © Software7 1995.
It is distributed as freeware, we retain
copyright but you may pass it around freely
(But don't make any profit from doing so)
Introduction
------------
Paint is the most frequently used sprite editor.
It is fine for most work, and excells at icon
design and sprites for windows but seriously
falls down when it comes to outline fonts.
This utility was written to take a string of
text and create a sprite, in a selected font
at any size and any coulour.
Using
-----
To use Font Paint, double click on the !FontPaint
icon in the directory display. After a few seconds
the same icon should appear on the icon bar. A
single click here opens the main control window.
This is a scrolling pane within a border window.
The main window
---------------
The window contains various controls for setting the
font name, font size, background and text colours
(Specified as RBG values, between 0 and 255 alowing
you to chose from 16.7 million colours).
There is a sub section for controling the sprites,
and of course an editable field for the display
text.
To create a sprite, first of all select the font you
wish to use for the text. This is obtained via the
standard RISC OS font menu. Next you should select
the size for the text. A list of available sizes is
given on a menu. You should now select the background
colour and the text colour.
If you wish to plot the text over another sprite, then
select the Use Backdrop Sprite option and drag the icon
for the sprite file onto the target icon.
Once all the parameters are set click on the Make Sprite
button on the shell pf the pane.
The screen will be drawn, there is a slight pause before
the desktop re-appears while the data is saved as sprites.
When the desktop re-appears there will be a save box open.
There are two radio icons in the save box, alowing you to
chose wether you save the whole screen or just the text.
Select the option you desire then drag the icon into a
directory display to save. There is a writable field to put
the filename in, if you specify a pathname in here and click
on OK the sprite is saved to this file instead.
Sprites
=======
When using sprites, the background colour is plotted before the sprite.
You will get some phycadelic effects if you use 256 colour sprites in
16 colour modes, and vice versa. To cure this just put the sprite
through !ChangeFSI with the output options the same as the input
options.
When saving the text only, some of the sprite may be clipped as only
the text width and height are read, not the sprite dimensions.
All sprites are plotted at 0,0.
