INSTRUCTIONS ON USING !VZAP FOR NEW USERS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First of all, don't panic. Sit back and read through these instructions. Viruses
can't spread if you're not loading anything so nothing will happen while you make
yourself a cup of tea and read through these instructions.
Despite scaremongering in the press, Archimedes viruses are, luckily, still quite
rare. Most problems in fact, turn out to be no more than a bug or quirk in a piece
of software, or simply incorrect user settings confusing the computer.
The most common Archimedes viruses are the "Extend" virus and the "Module" virus.
There are several strains of these two viruses, but luckily again, none seem to be
all that harmful. You can usually tell that you've become infected merely because
a message appears on the screen telling you so, or a previously reliable software
application gives a strange "Address Exception" error when trying to load it.
Other than the irritation factor - and that of wasting space on your computer -
that's about the extent of these two viruses.
So, What do you do if you think you've got a virus?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First of all, make sure you have a 'master' copy of !VZap on a write-protected
floppy disc. Store this safe somewhere, even if you have a hard disc. This will
ensure that even in the worst situations you can avoid panic by knowing that
you have an unaffected virus scanner at the ready.
It's also best to keep a spare copy of !System on the !VZap disc, just in case.
However, it doesn't matter because even if !VZap reports that a virus is already
in memory, it won't spread any further while you follow these instructions.
Load !VZap by double-clicking on it's icon in a filer window. It should appear on
the icon bar after a few seconds. If it tells you a virus is already present in
memory, don't worry. !VZap will deal with it in a minute.
Scanning for viruses
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you're unsure about what to do in the event of a virus infection, or if you've
never used !VZap before, you should turn on 'Auto Zap' at this point. You don't
need to know what this does if you're a beginner (it's actually explained in the
file called 'Manual') but should press MENU (the middle mouse button) over the
!VZap icon on the icon bar and then click SELECT (the left mouse button) on the
'Choices' option. This will open a (rather complicated looking) window containing
a number of options. Don't worry about them at this stage. Just make sure that
there is a little 'star', or 'cross' next to the 'Auto Zap' icon. If there isn't,
simply click SELECT on it until a little star appears (meaning it is set to ON).
Each time you click SELECT on it, it will alternate between ON and OFF, so don't
worry if you accidentally click twice - simply click once more.
Once the 'Auto Zap' option is on, you can close the 'Choices' window by clicking
on the 'x' window icon (top left corner) and you are ready to scan for viruses.
Now click SELECT on the !VZap icon and the main status window will open. You
now need to determine which disc you want to scan. If you have a hard disc, you
should do this first. Click SELECT on either of the two icons in the bottom
right corner (ADFS and 0) to change the drive number or filing system.
Once the drive and filing system have been set, you simply click SELECT on the
yellow bar in order to carry out the scan. From here on it's automatic (that's
what Auto Zap means) and will automatically eliminate any known viruses it
comes across).
Because the virus scan of !VZap is non-multitasking it means that viruses can't
reload themselves while !VZap is running, so you know that when !VZap has finished
it's scan, your disc will be clear.
Once the disc scan has finished, you can continue the above steps to scan further
discs or simply close the scan window to continue using your computer. That's it.
Better to be safe!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If !VZap comes across any viruses while performing it's disc scan, or if !VZap
previously informed you that a virus was already present before you started the scan,
it's best to now press CTRL-BREAK or turn the computer off and then on again. This
will make sure that any virus already in the computers memory will be cleared.
If you scanned a hard disc, your machine should now re-boot safely, without loading
any viruses.
It wasn't that bad was it?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And that's really all there is to it. I hope these instructions made you feel a bit
more relaxed about scanning for viruses. All registered !VZap users are welcome to
contact me for personal help or advice if they are still confused, or don't
understand these instructions - or just want to offer ideas for future versions.
