- 0.1 INTRODUCTION

- This is the fifth manual of the Amiga C Encyclopedia. This
- manual explains how to use the special "devices" like the
- timer, gameport, audio, narrator, trackdisk, serial, parallel,
- and printer devices. The devices are rather straight forward
- to use and can do almost everything you need.

- Here is a list of the chapters in this manual:

- 1. Devices Explains how to use the special devices.
- Both synchronous and asynchronous
- requests are explains, how to wait and
- check for errors etc... Read this chapter
- before you continue with the following
- chapters.

- 2. Timer Device Demonstrates the timer device, how to
- set timer requests, different timer
- modes and how to use the special timer
- functions. 4 examples are included.

- 3. Gameport Device Describes the gameport device, and how
- to collect joystick and mouse
- information. This is the "clean" way to
- read gameport events. 4 examples are
- included.

- 4. Audio Device Explains how to play sounds with the
- four audio channels, and how to construct
- waveforms. Everything from playing a
- simple tune to sampled sounds in stereo
- is explained. 6 examples are included.

- 5. Narrator Device The narrator device is used when you want
- the Amiga to read a text. Used together
- with the Translator library you can let
- the Amiga read complete sentences. By
- altering the volume, pitch, sex, speed etc
- can very different types of voices be
- used. 6 examples are included.

- 6. Trackdisk Device The trackdisk device controls the low
- level disk drive routines. With it you
- can directly and very fast read complete
- tracks, format disks, etc... Several
- support routines are included with which
- you easily can create disk copy and disk
- viewer programs just to mention a few.
- 4 examples are included.

- 7. Serial Device Describes how to use the serial device
- to send and collect data with the serial
- port. 4 examples are included.

- 8. Parallel Device Describes how to use the parallel device
- to send and collect data with the
- parallel port. 4 examples are included.

- 9. Printer Device Explains how to use the printer device
- to print text, change printer mode and
- styles etc... With it you can even print
- graphics. 4 examples are included.

- In the directory "ChapterPictures" you will find a collection
- of 9 pictures. These pictures are supposed to be printed
- and put in front of each chapter in this manual.
