  4. The  catalogs  contained in the Locale directory are for use primarily with
  5. Workbench  2.1  and 3.0.  They are automatically copied to your system disk
  6. by the installation scripts.

  9. How to localize PowerCache
  10. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  11. I  have included the source required to localize PowerCache to any language
  12. (standard  CatComp .ct (catalog translation) file format).  It is stored as
  13. a standard LhA archive in this directory.
  14.  
  15. If  PowerCache is not yet localized in your particular language, I would be
  16. most  grateful  for  any translation you can provide me with.  However, you
  17. should probably contact me first, so I can coordinate who's doing what.
  18.  
  19. The .ct format may not be particulary intelligible to you, if you are not a
  20. programmer.  You may want to have a look at the other .ct files, to see how
  21. others have done.
  22.  
  23. There are a few important points that you must observe, when translating:
  24.  
  25. · Make clear, understandable translations. Your target is a user who
  26.   has no understanding whatsoever of programming lingo.
  27.  
  28. · Try translating EVERY english word. Use synonyms for the hard ones. For
  29.   example, use "read-ahead" in stead of "prefetch", or "reserve" or "get"
  30.   in stead of "allocate". I'll allow some rephrasing in the translation
  31.   of the longest strings, but not too much.
  32.  
  33. · Leave words you have NO translation for, in english.  For example, if you
  34.   have no translation for "hotkey", don't try translating "hot" and "key"
  35.   seperately, in desperation.  Such attempts usually give meaningless
  36.   results (funny, but meaningless).

  38. · Very technical phrases may remain in english.
  39.  
  40. · Cross-check with other .ct files if you have any doubts about what to
  41.   translate, and what to leave in english.
  42.  
  43. · Make sure gadget and other GUI related strings still fit when translated.
  44.   Abbreviate if you have to.
  45.  
  46. · Some strings contain control information such as "%s" or "%ld". This
  47.   indicates that a string or number is to eventually appear at that
  48.   position, so you'll have to include this information in your translation
  49.   as well.
  50.  
  51. · A \n means "new line". Include this information in translated strings,
  52.   too. Keep lines approximately as long as they were originally.
  53.

  55. Lastly, let me remind you that a complete translation requires not only the
  56. program  strings,  but also the install script to be localized.  Since this
  57. requires  some  basic information on how The Installer works, I'd prefer if
  58. you just translated all the english strings you can find in the script, and
  59. put  this translation into a seperate file.  I will then insert the strings
  60. at the correct positions.
  61.  
  62. As  previously  mentioned,  translations  are  most welcome.  I aim to have
  63. PowerCache  100%  localized  in  all  the  standard  languages -- and a few
  64. others,  if  possible  (where's  that Polish translation, Chris? :-).   I'm
  65. afraid I can't pay anyone for their trouble, but I do offer a free key file
  66. for anyone who contributes a translation.  Good enough?

  68. One  important  note:   Do  NOT  release .catalog or .ct files on your own.
  69. Mail  translations to me.  I will then incorporate it into the distribution
  70. and  give  you  proper  credit  in  PowerCache's  manual.  Further, I can't
  71. coordinate  anything  if  catalog  files  of  all  kinds of languages start
  72. floating around.
  73.
