  10. Autoconf is an extensible package of m4 macros that produce shell
  11. scripts to automatically configure software source code packages.
  12. These scripts can adapt the packages to many kinds of UNIX-like
  13. systems without manual user intervention.  Autoconf creates a
  14. configuration script for a package from a template file that lists the
  15. operating system features that the package can use, in the form of m4
  16. macro calls.

  18. Autoconf requires GNU m4.  The configuration scripts produced by
  19. Autoconf are independent of Autoconf when they are run, so their users
  20. do not need to have Autoconf (or GNU m4).
