  81.     An Installer script is provided.  The installation itself is rather
  82. easy.  I found it a bit difficult to set up of the network itself, as I had
  83. never done it before.

  86. CONNECTORS

  88.     There are two connectors on the back of the board: one AUI connector
  89. (for so-called "thick-wire ethernet"), and one BNC connector for thin-wire
  90. ethernet.  You also may order a 10BASE-T (RJ45) version which replaces the
  91. BNC connector.

  94. QUICKNET SOFTWARE - THE EPROM
  95.  
  96.     There is an EPROM on the QuickNet board which contains both a SANA-II
  97. compatible device and the QuickNet networking software. You may choose one or
  98. the other by simply changing a switch on the back of the board.

  101. QUICKNET SOFTWARE - THE MASTER SIDE...
  102.  
  103.     In addition to the software in the EPROM, there is a special
  104. software to be installed on the "master-server", which is the machine that
  105. is likely to be rebooted the least.  You need to install the software only
  106. on this machine. The disk-sharing process for all "slave" machines is
  107. done completely from here.  Each board has its own "physical" address which
  108. is used to recognize the board on the network.
  109.  
  110.     Once the "master-server" is completely installed, all the "slave"
  111. machines will display a requester when they boot, containing a "username"
  112. and a "password" field.  Then, the remote machine may use any of the shared
  113. disks on the network just as if the disk were in the remote machine itself.
  114. The device recognises the ".backdrop" icons of the WorkBench 2.x and all the
  115. snapshots made. The network is completely transparent to the user!
  116.  
  117.     For each user, you may set up different access levels, different
  118. configurations, and different shared disks.  You should do this only on the
  119. "server" machine.  If you need to add a machine, you need to change only
  120. the configuration of the "master-server" to add the address of the new board
  121. in the list.

  123.     On some diskless machines, you may boot remotely from another machine
  124. on the network. This is VERY useful to save money!  No hard disk is
  125. required on the slave!!

  128. AREXX PORT
  129.  
  130.     QuickNet has an ARexx port. It allows you to send ARexx scripts on
  131. other machines in the network! You may, for example, pilot a slideshow on all
  132. machines of the network from a single machine.  You could also use it in
  133. schools so the teacher may run tutorial software on the students'
  134. machines, etc....

  137. SANA-II DEVICE - WITH ENVOY
  138.  
  139.     Yes, there is also a SANA-II device. I tested it with Envoy (not
  140. included in the package) which is another networking software package done by
  141. Commodore. Envoy works only on Workbench 2.0 and higher.

  143.     The purpose of this review is to test QuickNet, not to test Envoy!
  144. I'll not talk a lot about this software, except that it works fine with
  145. QuickNet, is a bit easier to install, but is not fully transparent to the
  146. user.  Envoy is a LOT slower than QuickNet, but the about the same speed of
  147. any other Ethernet board....

  150. SANA-II DEVICE - WITH AMITCP/NetNFS
  151.  
  152.     Here again, I'm not going to test AmiTCP nor NetNFS in this review,
  153. but I want to point out a few things:
  154.  
  155.     I was able to set up an NFS network with a PC compatible, running a
  156. NFS master software (on OS/2). AND IT WORKED FINE!!
  157.  
  158.     Actually there is no Master-NFS available for the Amiga computer.
  159. On the other side, you HAVE to have a multitasking machine or a dedicated
  160. singletasking machine to run the master-NFS software (that's why I used OS/2
  161. which allows multitasking).
  162.  
  163.     The installation of AmiTCP and NetNFS was a lot harder than that of
  164. QuickNet of Envoy, and of course I had to install NFS software on the PC
  165. compatible. The speed is also "as slow" as Envoy, just like any other
  166. Ethernet board.

  169. DOCUMENTATION

  171.     QuickNet comes with printed documentation.  The documentation is
  172. written for beginners, but there still are a few points that are not well
  173. explained (or not at all).  But overall, I was able to figure everything out
  174. myself.

  179.     - ARexx Port !!!
  180.     - I only had to set up one machine.
  181.     - I was able to boot with diskless machines.
  182.     - The QuickNet networking software is REALLY fast!!!

  186. DISLIKES AND SUGGESTIONS

  188.     - The manual could be more complete.
  189.     - QuickNet doesn't detect the addresses of the boards by itself.

  193. COMPARISON TO OTHER SIMILAR PRODUCTS
  194.  
  195.     The strong point of the QuickNet software is its SPEED. It is
  196. significantly faster than any other board I tested.  Besides, very few boards
  197. have the "boot on another computer" feature.  And NONE have that very useful
  198. ARexx port!!

  213.     This is a very good Ethernet board.  It is fast, reliable, completely
  214. transparent to the user when using the QuickNet software, and perfectly
  215. usable in other networks with other machines than Amigas with its SANA-II
  216. compatible device.
