  90.     I am assuming the reader has read the other reviews of this product;
  91. I am primarily covering differences for the 3000 version.
  92.

  97.     First off: The A3000 (non-tower) version has *two* SIMM slots.  Not
  98. four.  The documentation specifically contradicts this.  The packaging
  99. contradicts this.  This is bad.
  100.  
  101.     The Warp Engine is not compatible with Static Column ZIPs.  This is
  102. not mentioned in the docs.  At least one person I talked to has it running
  103. with them, but it wouldn't run that way for me.
  104.  
  105.     The SCSI-II controller is incompatible with the A3000's motherboard
  106. controller.  This is also not documented.  If you use the 3000's controller,
  107. you may or may not experience random crashes, and will very likely see
  108. random disk failures on drives off the A3000's controller.  It is
  109. incompatible with some disks (as noted before).
  110.  
  111.     I was able to work around the latter by getting a -08 revision SCSI
  112. chip.  With this, I can use my CD-ROM again.
  113.  
  114.     The board is blindingly fast.  I was primarily working under NetBSD,
  115. and I encountered one problem that went away with a later revision of
  116. NetBSD.  All of the other bugs have been confirmed by MacroSystem.
  117.  
  118.     They do not support the use of the WarpEngine with the internal SCSI
  119. controller; that's merely something I was able to get to work.
  120.

  122. DOCUMENTATION
  123.  
  124.     The documentation simply fails to cover adequately the known
  125. problems and limitations.  The A3000 docs are a separate page; the main
  126. manual is for the 4000.
  127.  
  128.     The documentation describes features specific to a motherboard other
  129. than the one I have; they cannot be followed precisely.
  130.  
  131.     Many things that should have been in the docs were left out; see
  132. above.

  135. LIKES
  136.  
  137.     It's fast, and it's quite nice to be able to have SCSI-II, memory,
  138. and a fast accelerator, all without using a Zorro slot.

  141. DISLIKES AND SUGGESTIONS
  142.  
  143.     I was upset by the poor documentation, and the blatant inaccuracies
  144. in it.
  145.

  147. COMPARISON TO OTHER SIMILAR PRODUCTS
  148.  
  149.     It's faster than a 4000 or an '040 NeXT.  This is about all I can
  150. compare to.
  151.  
  152.  
  153. BUGS
  154.  
  155.     The ones I found:
  156.     1.  Static Column ZIPs may not work.  This is not documented.
  157.     2.  Not compatible with native SCSI driver.
  158.     3.  May not work with some SCSI devices; reason unknown.
  159.  
  160.  
  161. VENDOR SUPPORT
  162.  
  163.     The technical support hours are minimal; business hours only, two
  164. days a week.  There is no 800-number, so this required me to make a long
  165. distance call from work.
  166.  
  167.     The first support representative I talked to was unable to give me
  168. any useful information.  The response to my complaint that the documentation
  169. and packaging are inaccurate (in reference to the 2 vs. 4 SIMM issue) was "If
  170. you don't like it, you can always take it back."  This strongly tempted me
  171. to.  The representative had never heard of Unix, and was unable to grasp my
  172. statement that NetBSD was not running under AmigaDOS, and did not need
  173. 68040.library.
  174.  
  175.     The second representative I talked to (two days later, after I had
  176. figured out one or two things) was able to inform me of the details of the
  177. RAM issue (that Static Column is a problem) and told me more about the
  178. problems with internal SCSI.  After this, I was able to work things out on
  179. my own, at some length.  Some of their representatives are better than
  180. others.
  181.  
  182.     I did not get any responses to any of my email to their given email
  183. addresses; I suspect the sole person maintaining them is awfully busy.

  191. CONCLUSIONS
  192.  
  193.     The product is, for what it is, an excellent product.  It is not
  194. exactly what the packaging claims.  It is by no means plug and play.  It is
  195. extremely fast and responsive.  I have found the system I run to be at least
  196. 6-10 times as fast as it used to be.  (This is a combination of processor
  197. speed, memory speed, and disk speed, I suspect.)  The technical support and
  198. documentation are poor.  Make sure you know competent repair techs before
  199. undertaking to work with this, especially if your A3000 was not one of the
  200. most recent batches.

  202.     I rate it 4 stars out of 5 overall.
  203.  
  204.     I would love to see these people provide better support for what
  205. looks like it could be an excellent product.  I'd love to see more honesty
  206. in the advertisements, packaging, and documentation.
  207.  
  208.     If every issue that they told me they already knew about had been in
  209. the manual, it would have taken me two days, not two weeks, to get my system
  210. running.
