In this picture are some of the best-known rangemen in the Canadian West. Most, by the time their ranching careers had ended, had gone through the usual long apprenticeship from cowhand, to foreman, to ranch manager, to ranch owner. All of the stockmen here had, at one time, been accorded by their peers that ultimate distinction of being elected captain of the general roundup. By the time the resented "sod-buster" began to appear in numbers after the turn of the century, these men were well on their way to being "old-timers". Howell Harris for example, (standing extreme left) manager of the Conrad Brothers Circle Ranch, had been in the territory since the early 1870's when he ventured north from Fort Benton, Montana as a whiskey trader.
