As the crowd grew uglier, it became apparent that the Special Police could never handle the situation. The mayor then asked for federal intervention and read the Riot Act. The Mounties cleared the streets by making several charges through the crowd. Here the crowd is looking north up Main as the Mounted Police make their second charge. They are travelling south from James Street in the distance. (They are seen as a line of riders strung across Main Street beyond the stalled street car).
