This cartoon by N. McConnell, which appeared in Saturday Night magazine February 7,1903, expressed disenchantment with the party politics of the day. On the left, Liberal Premier George Ross and, on the right, Conservative Opposition Leader J.P. Whitney seek campaign funds. The despair of finding honesty in either of the political parties led many to advocate the appointment of independent commissions of businessmen and experts to operate state-owned services, or to run governments.
