Under the influence of the "Social Gospel" movement, the churches (especially the Presbyterian and Methodist) set up special boards and departments to direct the church's response to the social issues of immigration, poverty and unemployment. These special groups provided some of the impetus to investigate and report on social conditions. One of their functions was to educate fellow churchmen and to make Christianity relevant in the process. Posters like this one were used at church conferences to educate members about social problems.
