These two views of a Canadian irregular provide additional information about his clothing and supplies. The distinctive woollen toque protected the head and, under extreme conditions, was supplemented by additional fur and cloth covering to shield the face from ice and wind. The heavy woollen blanket coat (capot) had a hood and extended below the knees. A colourful sash (ceinture flÄchÄe) held the coat closed and provided a useful carrying place for articles such as a bayonet. Leather leggings, worn over trousers, provided protection from the dense undergrowth of the North American wilderness and the cutting edges of winter ice formations. The round, wooden canteen contained spirits and the cartridge box provided a convenient supply of preassembled paper cartridges with powder and ball inside. The Indian pipe bag held such items as clay pipes tobacco and flints. This irregular's musket completes his equipment.
