The arrows indicate the routes followed by the whaling ships during a season's voyage. During the winter almost this entire area is covered in ice. As summer approaches the ice cover melts and breaks up into smaller pieces which are carried out of the Arctic by the current flowing through Hudson Strait and Davis Strait. It was this ice flow which the whalers battled as they sailed their ships toward the whaling grounds.
