Pauline Cove on Herschel Island was a favourite winter harbour for American whalers in the Beaufort Sea. Anchored within the fingerlike sandspit, the ships were protected from the currents which tossed the ice to and fro in more open waters. During the winter of 1894-1895, fifteen ships took refuge here and the barren island was alive with a temporary population of hundreds of whalers and Inuit.
