In 1903 this whaling station on Blacklead Island in Cumberland Sound was owned by merchants in Scotland. A small staff was sent out from Europe but the actual whaling was carried on by Inuit who came each spring and fall to work at the station. The station also collected furs and other trade goods. Whalers had been visiting Cumberland Sound since the 1840s and established the first shore stations not long after.
