By the beginning of the First World War, some immigrants were acquiring a degree of economic security. The family shown in this photograph is relatively prosperous. Note the lace collar, an old country tradition, on the youngest boy. The headwear of the boys and the father includes caps, common to immigrants, and bowlers, usually an indication of white collar status.
