This photograph depicts Main Street immediately south of the CPR tracks and station. The bustling heart of the business sector was often a bewildering, even forbidding place to many newcomers. But it was also an area of blatant attractions. Note the large number of liquor outlets, from bars and hotels to the more euphemistically named whole- sale dealers. Single men and those who had preceded their families to Canada were likely customers. Shopping on this main entry to the North End could thus be an exciting and tempting adventure. Note also that horse and wagon were still the main modes of transportation. Many wagons were equipped with a shovel for cleaning up after the horses.
