Many immigrants preferred to work independently at whatever would provide a livelihood. This photograph, taken in 1909, shows one of the ubiquitous junkmen who bought and sold scrap throughout the North End. Almost everything could be recycled in some manner and little was ever wasted. The large number of such junkmen testifies to the vital and lucrative service they were providing.
