The various ethnic groups founded many newspapers. Winnipeg, indeed, was the publishing centre of the ethnic press for most of western Canada. Most newspapers were vehicles for political or religious persuasion. All, however, realized the connection between language and culture. This photograph shows the interior of Robochyi narod (The Working People), a Ukrainian socialist newspaper, about 1918. The signs advertise various proletarian dramas then being presented in the North End. At centre-right in the photograph is Matthew Popovich who a few years later became one of the founders of the Communist Party of Canada.
