Since he ranked third in the colony's chain of command, the town major at times found himself in charge of every facet of its government. Ordinarily, however, he was concerned only with the military aspects of the place. He not only directed all matters relating to the security of the fortress, but also oversaw the entire administration of the garrison. There was a tremendous amount of paperwork attached to the position, and the number of daily assignments which came under his direction would have kept the major on the go from four in the morning until well after ten at night. To assist the major in these tasks an aide-major was appointed from among the company officers. The uniform worn by the major would have reflected his senior position within the garrison, as well as his esteemed place in Louisbourg society.
