Seen here is a camp of Iroquois warriors with their captives secured by prisoner ties (upper engraving). Upon entry to their home village, the warriors forced the prisoners to sing a personal war song and to run the gauntlet (lower). Two prisoners carry scalps attached to poles. A few met death there, but many were adopted by the Iroquois and incorporated in the matrilineage of their captors. This engraving is from the book Moeurs des sauvages amΘriquains (Paris, 1724) by Joseph-Franτois Lafitau, a French Jesuit missionary who served in QuΘbec.
