The North End of Winnipeg was variously known as the "Foreign Quarter", "New Jerusalem", or "C.P.R. Town". It was in this district that the vast majority of Winnipeg's Jews and Slavs resided. This photograph was taken at the corner of King and Dufferin. Notice the distinctive dress of the people in the photograph and the generally poor condition of their homes. Conditions like these led to Winnipeg's high death-rate during this period, especially among the foreign-born.
