Another fast developing community was Bytown, which became the city of Ottawa in 1855. The Sapper's Bridge (shown here) above the entry to the Rideau Canal was first built by the Royal Engineers who had worked on the canal. On the left is the spreading Lower Town. Beyond the right end of the bridge, the government buildings of a larger, confederated Canada would arise in the 1860's.
