Montreal at the Time of the Conquest, Thomas Patten engraved by P. Canot.
As can be seen from this river view, the former mission site and frontier fur trade post, was already a well-developed eighteenth century town, crowned by church spires and surrounded by walls which dated from the 1720s - but which were to be removed after the War of 1812 to allow for greater growth. Even by the 1760s, however, the town had spread from its original waterfront location to a slightly higher plain beyond; though it was still far from the slopes of Mount Royal, which dramatically dominates the scene here.
