Loyalists at the Site of Kingston, E. W. Greir from an original drawing by J. W. Peachey.
Some of the American colonists who remained loyal to the British side in the Revolution of 1776, and who settled in Canada after peace with the United States in 1783, came up the St. Lawrence to its junction with Lake Ontario. Here, at the site of the old French Fort Frontenac, their encampment grew into the town of Kingston. In general, the Loyalists laid the basis for the new English-speaking province of Upper Canada and for the rising urban centres in its midst.
