The completion of the Crows' Nest Pass railway from the CPR mainline in Alberta through the coal rich south Alberta-Crow's Nest Pass region integrated the coal and metal mining areas with the Canadian economy. Also coal and coke were used in the smelters of the Kootenays and Boundary regions.
