King's foreign policy was often baffling and self-contradictory to his critics. His long public statements on foreign policy seemed to say nothing definie and therefore disappointed those who wanted him to agree with them on Canada's "proper" course in international affairs. King justified his public policy of "no commitments" by referring to the overwhelming necessity to preserve national unity which might be endangered by a ferocious public debate on foreign policy issues. If no one had anything to attack, they could hardly divide the country on the point. This Liberal election poster urges Canadians to keep King in office and not to allow the links in the chain of national unity to become rusty.
