For a generation the lightning raids of the Canadians and their Amerindian allies reached every corner of English territory. Because they were the closest to the St.Lawrence colony, and because it was known that the Iroquois were armed, supplied and encouraged by the New Yorkers, the remote settlements on the New York-New England frontier were especially vulnerable to retaliation from New France. Also, French and Indian bands frequently penetrated to the very heart of the settled colonies: Haverhill, for instance, was only fifty kilometres from Boston.
