In the days before the automobile, when most travel was by horse and wagon or train, all communities had at least one inn. These inns usually were not very large; one or two rooms for guests, along with a dining area. The Stag Hotel was owned by William Deer or Dear, a black who lived on the Preston Road. The inn was built in 1840, and the old sign, which stood originally on the side of the road opposite the inn, is one of the few such signs to survive.
