The black settlement at Preston is one of the older black communities in Nova Scotia. The first settlers arrived between 1783 and 1790, when a few black Loyalists moved there. They were later joined by some of the Black Refugees who arrived in 1815. Like most early communities, one of the most important buildings in the settlement was the church in the left background. Note the stony ground, so typical of the poor quality land granted to blacks.
