(I have a book of crochet patterns, but I'm not sure exactly) what you are
looking for. These are the patterns I was able to find that look like X's:)
Half Double crochet cluster II
1st row: skip 2ch (count as 1hdc), hdc2tog inserting hook into each of next
2ch, *hdc2tog inserting hook first into same ch as previous cluster then into
next ch; rep from * until 1ch remains, hdc into last ch, turn.
2nd row: 2ch (count as 1hdc), hdc2tog inserting hook first into first st then
into next st, *hdc2tog inserting hook first into same st as previous cluster
then into next st; rep from * ending 1hdc into top of tch, turn.
Repeat 2nd row.
Crossed Double Crochet Stitch
special abbreviation: 2Cdc (2 crossed double crochet)=skip next st, 1 dc into
next st, 1 dc into skipped st working over previous dc. 1st row) (right side)
skip 3 ch (count as 1dc), *2dc over next 2ch; rep from * ending 1 dc into last
ch, turn. 2nd row) 1ch (counts as 1 sc), skip 1 st, 1 sc into next and each st
to end, working last st into top of tch, turn. 3rd row) 3ch (count as 1dc),
skip 1 st, *work 2Cdc ver next 2 st; rep from * ending 1 dc into tch, turn. Rep

Ch 8, join with sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 16 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 6 (counts as 1 dc, ch 3), skip first 2 sc, * 1 dc in next sc, ch 3,
skip next sc; repeat from * around - 8 ch-3 loops, join with sl st in third ch
of starting ch-3.
Rnd 3: Ch 8 (counts as 1 dc, ch 5), * work 1 dc in next dc, ch 5; repeat from *
around, join with sl st to third ch of starting ch-8.
Rnd 4: Ch 5 to form first corner loop, * work 7 sc in each of next 2 ch-5
loops, ch 5; repeat from * 3 times more omitting ch-5 at end of last repeat.
Rnd 5: * Work 7 sc in corner loop, ch 4, work 1 sc between last sc of next 7-sc
group and first sc of following 7-sc group, ch 4; repeat from * around, join
with 1 sl st to first sc.
Rnd 6: * Work 1 sc in each of 7 corner sc, ch 4, 1 sc in next sc of previous
row, ch 4; repeat from * around, join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 7: Ch 3, (ch 3, 1 sc in third ch from hook - picot made), * (1 dc in next
sc, picot) twice, (1 dc, picot, 1 dc) in next sc, (picot, 1 dc in next sc) 3
times, ch 3, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next sc, ch 3, 1 dc in next sc, picot; repeat
from * around, end with 1 sl st in third ch of starting ch-3 after last ch-3
loop has been worked. Fasten off.
Make as many squares as needed for your afghan.
Finishing: Squares can be joined by sewing together at picot points. Or, when
working last round of square, join to adjacent square at picot points by
working ch 1, drop loop, insert hook from front to back in corresponding picot
on adjacent square, pick up dropped loop and pull through, ch 1, work 1 sc in
first ch to complete joining picot. Join in a seven square by eight square
arrangement.
