  2.   Fibers to Use Other Than Floss
  3. ------------------------------------

  5. There are many types of fibers available today for counted thread work, with
  6. new specialty types appearing on a regular basis from companies such as
  7. Kreinik and the Caron Collection.  Here is a partial list of what you may
  8. find, and what they may be used for.
  9.  
  10. Flower Thread
  11.    A matte-finish, 100% cotton thread available in skeins.  Available from
  12.    several fiber manufacturers.  DMC has 108 flower thread colors, most of
  13.    which match their floss numbers.  Used for traditional Danish embroidery.
  14.    Also recommended for linen/evenweaves and for afghans.  About 2-3 times
  15.    thicker than embroidery floss, so you can use a single strand.

  17. Medici Wool
  18.    A DMC product with a homespun look.  Looks especially nice with natural
  19.    linen.
  20.  
  21. Metallic Blending Filament
  22.    One ply thin metallic thread, available on spools.  Frequently combined
  23.    with regular floss to provide extra sparkle.
  24.    Tips:
  25.       Use short strands.
  26.  
  27. Metallic Braids and Ribbons
  28.    Metallic threads, available on spools.  Used alone to provide definition,
  29.    sparkle and texture.  The braids are rounded, and the ribbons are flat.
  30.    Tips:
  31.       Slipknot the thread onto the needle.
  32.       Run the threads over a fabric softener sheet.
  33.       Use short strands.

  35. Perle Cotton
  36.    A "mercerized, twisted, non-divisible lustrous cotton thread" available in
  37.    skeins and balls.  Used with many counted thread techniques, such as pulled
  38.    thread and Hardanger.  Available in different weights.

  40. Ribbon Floss
  41.    A shiny, flat fiber.  Can be used with Metallic Ribbon to provide some
  42.    real sparkle.

  44. Silk Thread
  45.    Available as solid or hand painted variegated skeins.  Beautifully smooth.
  46.    CAUTION--some silk thread is not colorfast.
