  2.   Cutting the Floss

  6. Floss should be cut about 18"-20" long, or twice that if the thread will be
  7. doubled for the loop method.  Some people like to use one arm length when
  8. doubling. See section "2.12 How to Start the Thread" for more information
  9. about the loop method.

  11. Metallics, or any fiber with a very rough surface, should be cut somewhat
  12. shorter.  It helps prevent fraying.

  14. Most people prefer to separate the floss into individual strands, and then
  15. recombine them.  There is less twisting and knotting, and the stitches lie
  16. flatter.  To separate a thread from the others, hold onto the top end of the
  17. thread between your thumb and forefinger.  Pull down on it with the other
  18. thumb and forefinger, taking all the other threads with you. It looks like a
  19. knot will form, but have faith. Everything comes out just fine.
