  1. What is Drag And Zip? 
  2.  
  3. Drag And Zip is a set of utilities that makes Windows 3.1 file manager into
  4. a file manager for ZIP and LZH files.
  5.  
  6. With its built in routines to Zip and UnZip files, Drag And Zip makes it
  7. very easy to compress files into Zip files and to extract files from Zip
  8. files from any Windows file manager that supports "Drag and Drop".  Drag And
  9. Zip also supports use of your copies of PKZIP and LHA to manage compressed
  10. files.

  12. To compress a file with Drag And Zip you merely "drag" files from the file
  13. manager and "drop" them on the Drag And Zip icon, fill out a dialog box with
  14. the filename and destination directory, and Drag And Zip will make a Zip
  15. file out of the selected files.

  17. Viewing the contents of a ZIP or LZH file is as easy as double clicking on
  18. its listing in file manager.  Drag And Zip's ZIP file viewer, Zip View, will
  19. automatically be loaded and will show you the contents of the compressed
  20. file.  You can tag any group of files in Zip View for extraction or
  21. deletion.  You can view any file with Zip View's built-in file viewer or the
  22. file viewer of your choice. You can temporarily extract any file from the
  23. compressed file and run it if it is a program, or run the program associated
  24. with it if it is a data file.  If you make modifications to the extracted
  25. file, you will also have the opportunity to replace the older file currently
  26. in the compressed file with the modified one.  You can also make
  27. self-extracting archives.

  29. If you have a virus scanner, you can have Drag And Zip scan the files in the
  30. archive for possible viruses.  There is also a check out feature where you
  31. can temporarily extract the files from a ZIP file and give them their own
  32. program group to "check them out".

  34. Also part of the Drag And Zip utilities is Fileman Launcher.  Fileman
  35. Launcher installs as a file manager extension and runs Drag And Zip every
  36. time you run Windows File Manager or any file manager that supports file
  37. manager extensions.  When you exit File Manager, Drag And Zip will exit
  38. automatically at the same time.  Fileman Launcher has its own menu in File
  39. Manager.  You can use this menu to ZIP files instead of dragging them to the
  40. Drag And Zip icon.  You can also add other programs to be run with File
  41. Manager through the Fileman Launcher menu.

  43. To use Drag And Zip you need to be running Windows 3.1 or better.  You will
  44. also need a copy of ZIP2EXE.EXE if you want to make self-extracting ZIP
  45. files.

  47. This version of Drag And Zip is designed to be compatible with PKZIP version
  48. 2.04 as well as version 1.1.  Any other versions of PKZIP may not work
  49. properly.  To use Drag And Zip to build and extract LZH files, you must have
  50. a copy of LHA.EXE.  Drag and Zip will not work with LHARC.EXE.

  77.                         Installing Drag And Zip
  78.  
  79. Installation of Drag And Zip and Zip View is very easy with the setup
  80. program provided. From Program Manager, choose "File" from the menu bar and
  81. then choose "Run" from the pull down menu.  In the Run dialog box, type the
  82. full path where the files are, and the program name DZSETUP.EXE.  For
  83. example, if you were installing from drive A:, you would enter
  84. "A:\DZSETUP.EXE".  If you were installing from the "DZ" directory of drive
  85. C:, you would enter "C:\DZ\DZSETUP.EXE".

  87. The DZSetup program gives you two install and two uninstall options.

  89. Install options 
  90. 1.  You can install Drag And Zip with Fileman Launcher.  Fileman Launcher
  91. installs as a file manager extension and runs Drag And Zip every time you
  92. run File Manager.  Fileman Launcher will also keep Drag And Zip's icon
  93. uncovered when you are working in File Manager.  Some desktop programs like
  94. Norton Desktop load file manager extensions every time they load, so if you
  95. are using Fileman Launcher with Norton Desktop, Drag And Zip will run every
  96. time NDW runs.

  98. 2.  You can install Drag And Zip without Fileman Launcher.  Without Fileman
  99. Launcher, you will have to run Drag And Zip manually when you want to use
  100. it.

  102. Uninstall options 
  103. 1. You can remove Fileman Launcher.  This option will remove the line from
  104. your WINFILE.INI that runs Fileman Launcher whenever you run File Manager.
  105.  
  106. 2. You can completely remove the Drag And Zip installation from your
  107. computer.  Do not use this option to remove a previous installation of Drag
  108. And Zip.  It can only be used to remove a copy of Drag And Zip that was
  109. installed with this installation program.

  111. Installing 
  112. When you use the DZSetup program to install Drag And Zip it will first ask
  113. you which drive and directory you would like to install Drag And Zip to.  If
  114. the path that you enter is different from the path you are installing Drag
  115. And Zip from, all files will be copied over to the new path.  If they are
  116. the same, the installation program will assume that you only want to make
  117. modifications to a currently installed version of Drag And Zip, and not try
  118. to copy over the files.

  120. DZSetup will then ask you for permission to add lines to the "extensions"
  121. section of your "WIN.INI" file so Windows file manager will know to run Zip
  122. View when you double click on a ZIP file or an LZH file.

  124. If you choose not to have "WIN.INI" modified, you can still run Zip View
  125. from its icon in Program Manager and drag files to it or use Zip View's
  126. "File" menu to load ZIP files.

  128. The DZSetup program will then create a program group called Drag And Zip and
  129. put the Drag And Zip, Zip View and DZSetup icons in it.

  131. Using Drag And Zip 
  132.  
  133. When you run Drag And Zip, it will load and show its zipper icon at the
  134. bottom left of your screen.  Drag And Zip must be running for you to use it.
  135. It will not work if you try to drag files to its icon in Program Manager.

  137. Creating a Zip File 
  138. When you want to create a Zip or LZH file, run File Manager or any file
  139. manager that supports Drag and Drop, and tag the files that you want to Zip.
  140. Then hold  the mouse down on one of the tagged files.  The mouse cursor will
  141. become a white rectangle with a "+" on it. Move the mouse without taking
  142. your finger off the left button to the Drag And Zip icon. While you are
  143. moving the mouse, the cursor will become a circle with a slash through it.
  144. When the cursor is over the Drag And Zip icon, it will once more become a
  145. white rectangle with a "+" on it.

  147. Let go of the mouse button and the Drag And Zip dialog box will pop up.

  149. The dialog box will vary a bit depending if you are using the built-in Zip
  150. functions or an external copy of  PKZIP or LHA.

  152. Zip Filename 
  153. In this field you enter the name of the Zip file that you want to create. 
  154.  
  155. Archiver 
  156. You have the choice of  PKZIP or LHA.  If you want to change from Drag And
  157. Zip's built-in Zipping to an external copy of PKZIP or vice-versa, choose
  158. the settings button and make your changes there.

  160. Compression 
  161. If you are creating a Zip file the choices will appear in a drop down combo
  162. box.  The possible choices will vary depending on what version of PKZIP you
