  4.     DIED. Grace Hopper, 85, retired Navy rear admiral and
  5. computer-science pioneer; in Arlington, Va. After receiving a
  6. doctorate in mathematics from Yale in 1934, Hopper taught at her
  7. alma mater, Vassar. In 1943 she joined the Navy and used the
  8. forerunner of modern computers to do ordnance calculations.
  9. Hopper helped develop UNIVAC, the first large commercial
  10. computer. At 60, she was recalled to active duty to help
  11. standardize the Navy's computer languages. She retired in 1986
  12. as the nation's oldest active-duty officer. A blunt woman who
  13. smoked unfiltered cigarettes, she once called the women's
  14. movement "tommyrot and nonsense," declaring, "Being a woman
  15. won't hold you back if you have the desire, the courage and the
  16. skills."
