  8. LEONA HELMSLEY in an imperious ad for one of her Manhattan
  9. hotels. Yet this week the 71-year-old symbol of '80s avarice
  10. becomes another number in federal prison as she begins a
  11. four-year stretch for tax fraud (barring a successful final
  12. appeal). In last-ditch efforts to stay out of jail, she sought
  13. sympathy clad in a bathrobe during a Barbara Walters interview,
  14. as celebrity solicitor Alan Dershowitz argued in court that she
  15. was convicted on forged documents. The judge was unmoved. "It's
  16. an Al Capone sentence," says Dershowitz, calling the severe
  17. sentence punishment for Helmsley's boss-from-hell image.
